GamesRadar.com recently had the privilege of viewing some in-game footage of the future James Bond game based on the upcoming sequel to Casino Royale, The Quantum of Solace. But don’t expect to see any juicy spoilers about the film here, as tight security surrounding the film allowed only game play from events in Casino Royale to be shown, which the game will also cover.
As previously reported, Quantum runs on the Call of Duty 4 engine, and is naturally a first person shooter. However, players won’t always be seeing events directly through 007’s eyes, as the camera pulls back to the third person view whenever Bond takes advantage of the game’s cover system, or is in the middle of a physical action such as climbing along a ledge or ascending a ladder. And there will be plenty of moments when Bond is leaping around the environment, such as in the re-creation of the construction yard chase seen in Casino Royale that will task players with making the correct button presses to jump and swing their way towards the objective.
Other events that will require pressing the right button at the right time include take down sequences where Bond can silently dispatch enemies. Treyarch, the game’s developer, also hinted at several scripted moments that will suddenly occur, such as a random explosion, in order to keep the intensity, and player’s adrenaline, high.
Unfortunately no details were given regarding the game’s multiplayer mode, or any possibility of driving sequences. Given the fact that this new breed of Bond film is emphasizing James’ own unique skills, rather than relying on his cell phone to take out the bad guy, it’s interesting to see Treyarch apply this theme to the design of the videogame. It’s been some time since the gaming community got a real quality Bond game, but never say never again (yes, we know that was possibly the worst Bond film to reference).
