A little while back, we talked about how Nintendo was exploring USB devices for the Wii. On our wishlist of attachments was a hard drive, something that would finally let us download all willy-nilly from WiiWare without fear of running out of little boxes in which to put things. Well, it looks like Nintendo will do nothing of the sort, or at least they’ll insult us in the process.

During a recent Euro Nintendo event Laurent Fischer, Managing Director of Marketing for Nintendo of Europe, made an offhand remark that only "geeks and otaku" (those obsessed with Japanese culture, mainly anime and manga) would be interested in more Wii memory space.

Really? Only geeks and otaku? What about the millions of nostalgia gamers who enjoy downloading the old-school titles they grew up with to relive days gone by? What about casual gamers who are always jonesing for a new puzzle game fix or top-down shooter? What about the fact that as long as the Wii resists DLC, the farther it will fall behind the competition in terms of quality games?

Oh well, if being a geek means that I want a system that is trying to compete for my attention with two others to at least try and have a few similar features, then I suppose I shall wear my geek badge proudly. Now someone fetch me a pocket protector and an inhaler, I need to at least look the part.
