Nintendo Responds to May NPDs

The May NPD numbers just came in and Nintendo seems to be sitting pretty. With 1.1 million hardware units (Wii andDS) sold, the company can look forward to continuing to assail us with minigame collections, shovelware and the occasional Final Fantasy "remastering" for at least another 30 days.

While GTA IV held down the top spot in game sales, Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit came in at numbers 2 and 3 respectively, thus giving Nintendo plenty to smile about when it comes to software sales. This led Nintendo to claim that new peripherals such as the Wii Wheel and Balance Board are bridging the gap between new gamers and vets, and that people prefer diversity and new ideas to really nailing down one genre or demographic and catering exclusively to that group.

The company also took a moment to point out that Wii has now sold more than 10.2 million units, while the DS sits atop Handheld Mountain with over 20 million systems sold.

In all, the house that Mario built seems very happy with the latest numbers, and is ready to sally forth and continue crushing foes under the might of its waggle. With E3 coming up and the holidays just around the corner, we can expect continued dominance from Nintendo in the months to come.
