Nintendo "Working On" Storage for Wii
Posted by Brad Hilderbrand, Jun 17, 2008 14:29

Nintendo has had a bit of an image problem over the past couple weeks, what with Laurent Fischer making his "geeks" and "otaku" comment, and then later issuing a half-hearted apology that didn’t really win him any fans. Now Mr. Fischer has decided it’s best to stop talking about the audience and just stick with commenting on the products. When it comes to the issue of Wii storage space, Fischer says, "We definitely know that [gamers] are serious and we know that there is an issue in this, so it’s something that we’re working on."

Unfortunately, when pressed about whether this would mean a hard drive, Fischer squashed that dream quickly.

"Definitely there’s no plan to issue hardware, an external hard drive, but we know we have an issue in that area. It’s very obvious and we’re perfectly away of it, but there’s nothing we can say beyond this."

So how, prey tell, does one solve a storage problem without the inclusion of a hard drive? Is there already some 500 GB marvel lurking in the depths of the Wii just waiting to be activated by some combination of button presses and Wiimote waggles? I’d love to believe that Nintendo has some intuitive and elegant solution to all this, but I find it hard to believe that the company that seems more interested in getting housewives to hula-hoop than taking care of its traditional audience has any intention of putting this whole mess to bed sometime soon.
