Americans love the Xbox 360, so much so that it’s constantly outselling the PS3 and is only in second place behind the hit no one saw coming known as the Wii. This model doesn’t hold true in Europe and Japan, though, where the 360 lags far behind the competition. In fact, in Japan Microsoft’s console is regularly outsold by the PS2; you know, the one that still uses memory cards and corded controllers.
So while Japan may be a bust, Microsoft still believes they can make a comeback in Europe. David "Check Your Numbers" Gosen is convinced, and he’s ready to throw a whole lot of the company’s money into winning over that particular landmass.
"We have some very aggressive plans in terms of investing in this market to be successful. We are in Europe to win. We’re not here to come in second or third... We are going to invest to win in Europe."
That’s all well and good, but where exactly will these investments go? Simply advertising the thing likely won’t do any good, as by and large the types of games that drive the 360 don’t go over well in Europe. Consumers in the region have shown a clear distaste for Gears of War, Halo, and other "blood and boobs" titles, which are really the 360’s bread and butter. Perhaps instead of worrying so much about other markets, Microsoft would be well-served to realize that this is an American console, so they may as well stop throwing away money in other areas and just focus on really squeezing every last drop of coin they can get out of North America.
