Over the past week, there has been a strange site at the Blizzard homepage: a mysterious set of eyes looking out through a sheet of melting ice, with a little more of the image revealed each day. Many speculated what it all meant, some believed it was heralding news of World of Warcraft’s Wrath of the Lich King expansion, while a few brave souls dare hoped it was the sign of the return of a franchise for which they had been longing, a little series called Diablo.
Those hopeful few have seen their greatest joys confirmed, as Blizzard has officially announced the development of Diablo 3. While we don’t have anywhere near the full list of details, here’s a partial sampling of what we know so far.
- Five character classes will be in the final version, two of which have been confirmed: a re-done Barbarian and the new Witch Doctor.
- Havok physics will help power the game, alongside a new 3D graphics engine.
- Blizzard hopes to release the game "simultaneously in as many regions as possible, and to localize the game in several languages" for both PC and Mac platforms.
If that isn’t enough to slake your thirst of all things Diablo, hit up the full FAQ for answers to all your niggling questions. We don’t yet have details such as release dates, but Blizzard’s Frank Pearce has said there are no plans for console versions. We’ll make sure to bring you every detail we can find as they become available.
In the meantime, go change pants. If you’re anything like me, you peed a little when you saw the announcement.
