Dark Sector Developer to Work on BioShock PS3
Posted by Nick McCavitt, Jul 4, 2008 14:16

Yesterday, 2K Games officially confirmed that it has finalized a deal with Digital Extremes to create a PS3 port of the hit underwater FPS BioShock for the PS3. The game is scheduled for a release in October of this year and will come bundled with brand new gameplay additions and material. The Ontario-based Digital Extremes has been creating games for roughly 15 years and is particularly noteworthy for being the co-creators of Epic Games’ Unreal games. The experience the company collected from its work on Dark Sector will be directly applied to creating the PS3 version of the game.

The upper management at 2K Games seems to feel that Digital Extremes is qualified for the job of bringing BioShock to the PS3. Christopher Hartmann, the president of 2K Games, said that this deal had a number of advantages for both companies and for BioShock itself when he stated that partnering with Digital Extremes will give 2K Games is “a fully optimized experience that takes advantage of the Playstation 3 system hardware.” Including Digital Extremes on the project, Hartmann said, is helping the company to "deliver the best experience possible to our fans."

James Schmalz, the CEO and founder of Digital Extremes, also expressed excitement at being included on the BioShock project and regarded it as joining in one the BioShock project as a fait accompli: “when 2K approached us to assist with development on BioShock for the Playstation 3 system, it was a no-brainer.” Mr. Schmalz also added that anyone could agree that no one could “ask for a more exciting, technically impressive world to work in than Rapture, and the incredible knowledge and talent between the 2K studios and our team at Digital Extremes is unprecedented. The collaboration on this project will make the Playstation 3 system sing with Big Daddy goodness and Little Sister ’thank you’s."
