Steve Jobs, in a recent conversation with the New York Times, shared a little insight into the iPhone’s upcoming App Store. He explained that at the time of launch, the service will have 500 total applications available for download, and that over 160 of them, or a third of the total population as it were, will be games.
Why so many games? Well it’s largely because Apple isn’t making much off of applications that are sold. Developers are receiving 70% of all revenue, so companies can create fairly inexpensive iPhone games and sit back and reap the windfall. Of course, that is assuming people want games on their phone, but since the thing already does everything else, why wouldn’t they?
Jobs also talked a little about pricng, claiming that 25% of all content on the App Store would be free, and that 90% will be sold for less than $9.99. I’m guessing that the games aren’t going to fall into the category of things that are free. But of course that doesn’t matter because now you can play Super Monkey Ball while driving, making our nation’s highways even more dangerous than they already are. It’s the American way!
