Even though Square-Enix has announced that an Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy 13 will become a reality, they have been careful to note that it’s a port of their PS3 game currently in development. As Motomu Toriyama, director at Square-Enix, said during the company’s DK Sigma3173 event, the company isn’t going to alter “the direction of the development” of the game and confirmed that Square-Enix would be “making the PS3 version first, and then porting to the 360 later."
But even as a port, it appears Square has had little on its mind regarding the 360 version so far, as Moriyama revealed that the Final Fantasy 13 team doesn’t even have development kits yet. He said he told the team “to not think about the Xbox 360 right now,” and that the PS3 version is a more crucial priority.
Square is primarily focused on getting their PS3 version done first to meet the Japanese market as soon as possible, since they have explained that there will be no Japanese 360 version of the game. North American and PAL fans who had bought a PS3 in anticipation of the title will be disgruntled to learn that Square has estimated that the job of porting the game will hold back release in other regions, and that they will keep the game unreleased on the PS3 until they have completed the 360 version.
Although there was no concrete release window of any kind before, this further muddies the timeframe for when American fans may see the first installment of the series on the current generation of video game consoles. TGR will continue to bring you up-to-date coverage on any release date information available.
