Updates and Expansions Coming for PixelJunk Games
Posted by Brad Hilderbrand, Aug 11, 2008 16:16

The PixelJunk franchise has become one of PSN’s hottest properties, with PixelJunk Racers, Monsters, and Eden responsible for a ton of downloads, mounds of critical acclaim, and lots of money for Sony. As good as the games are, there are still detractors out there who rightly complain about how hard Pixeljunk Monsters is or how Eden only features one mode of play, so Q-Games is looking to fix all that.

The company’s Dylan Cuthbert has stated that PixelJunk Monsters will soon receive a patch which will let gamers choose from easy, medium, hard, and expert difficulties, thus bringing the games utterly insane difficulty down to a more manageable level. Those worried about their online high scores needn’t worry though, as the new difficulties will only be allowed in offline play, and anyone who wishes to upload scores and challenge your tower defense supremacy must continue playing on the default difficulty level.

PixelJunk Eden will also be receiving some attention, as Cuthbert has mentioned that they are looking into creating a patch that will allow new modes because the game’s swing mechanic is simply "much too fun to waste on just one set of game rules." For those who are also find this game a bit too tough, he says that the company is looking into "a more namby pamby mode for the ’lighter’ people out there." Presumably, this addition would either lengthen or remove the seemingly arbitrary "oscillation timer" that serves as your time limit in Eden’s levels, which I would personally find to be a welcome addition. I’d use it, even if they do call it "Namby Pamby Mode."

So it seems like the theme of the patches will be making the games easier and less frustrating for the less-talented among us, along with the expansion of Eden to more than simply snatching up pollen and opening flower buds. I’m hoping to see some sort of PixelJunk circus with Grimps doing various acrobatic trapeze acts and other feats of daring-do; what new modes would you recommend?
