Eidos Unveils New Batman Game
Posted by Brad Hilderbrand, Aug 13, 2008 13:45

We’ve all been waiting for a new Batman game, and Eidos is ready to deliver. The thing is, this isn’t the officially licensed Dark Knight game meant to be a companion to the movie, but rather a brand-new entry into the Caped Crusader’s storyline.

According to the latest issue of Game Informer, the new game is titled Arkham Asylum, and it presents a dark and gritty world based on the comic book characters. In this particular story, the Joker manages to bust himself and a bunch of his buddies out of Arkham during a prison transfer, thus unleashing all manner of mayhem on Gotham. It sounds a bit like the storyline in the LEGO Batman game, but I assume the Eidos version will probably be a bit less hilarious and adorable.

While previous Batman games have normally been combat heavy, this iteration will focus more on stealth and speed, with a dash of puzzle solving thrown in. Perhaps the most interesting revelation is that the title will utilize only three buttons (attack, throw and stun), meaning that a lot of battles come down to creatively using the environment and your various gadgets to ensure you don’t die a horrible, horrible death.

So as we start following the story of this new Batman game it continues to raise the question, "Where is the Dark Knight?" As EA and Pandemic continue to stutter and fumble over this poorly kept secret, you have to wonder how long fans are willing to wait before they lose interest and move onto something else. While High Moon tried to do the "late release" thing with their recent Bourne Conspiracy game, the title debuted to mixed reviews and lackluster sales, so the issue of timeliness rears its head again. With LEGO Batman coming very soon and this newly announced Arkham Asylum now on the way, you have to wonder: by the time the Dark Knight comes out, will we even care about Batman anymore?
