Let’s do a quick experiment, I promise it’ll only take a second. Run over to your game library real quick and check out the case of every game you’ve bought from July until today. I’ll go grab a snack and wait... You back? Good. Now then, riddle me this: did it seem like every case you looked at had either an EA or Activision Blizzard logo on it somewhere? If so, don’t be too shocked as Screen Digest is reporting that the two mega-publishers are responsible for 75% of all games released from July-September of this year.
A big reason for the uptake is that this is the time of year when EA releases a lot of its sports games, with NCAA Football, Madden, and Tiger Woods all coming out in July and August. Also, with Mercenaries II, Spore, Rock Band 2, and Guitar Hero World Tour all coming down the pipe, the two giant publishers have started pushing out several high-profile games in a time typically reserved for much more low-key fare.
Of course, those concerned with the power EA and Activision Blizzard wield over the industry will point to this revelation as a sign of impending monopoly, and they might not be far off. Also, with EA and Take-Two continuing their merger discussions behind closed doors it looks like one more major player may be bowing out soon, leaving us with even fewer publishers to fight the impending EA/ActiBliz monolith. I’m going to go ahead and order my copy of Tiger Woods World of Warcraft Skate It Wrath of the Lich King World Tour now so I can beat the rush.
