One issue Sony overlooked when they launched their online service was the fact that not everyone who’s online is old enough to have their very own piece of plastic that features their name and a special set of numbers stamped into it for the purposes of making a purchase. While Microsoft and Nintendo offer pre-paid cards for their online services, Sony has been slow out of the gate, only releasing PSN cards to a few specific regional retailers, and not yet making the cards available at all in popular game stores like EB Games and GameStop.
Thankfully, the issue is about to get a little less thorny, as Sony has announced that Blockbuster, 7-Eleven and RiteAid will all begin stocking PSN cards in September (that’s Monday, for those without a calendar handy). The pre-paid cards will work just like their Xbox Live and Nintendo brethren, allowing you to purchase content from the PlayStation Store using the special redeem code printed on the card.
It’s a smart move by Sony to get these cards into more outlets, thus ensuring at least a little bit more traffic and income via PSN. It’s strange that the cards are coming to convenience stores and pharmacies before making their way to game shops, but at least we know the cards will be making their way to the major retailers, it’s just taking a bit of time.
