There are a few universal truths in the console wars, facts even fanboys can’t refute. Microsoft cut corners when making the Xbox 360 and produced a faulty machine, Sony’s arrogance with the PlayStation 3’s launch cost them their spot at the top, and Nintendo just doesn’t seem to play nice with third-party publishers. Now, one analyst is willing to step out on a limb and say that this isn’t just a run of bad luck, but rather that Nintendo in general and the Wii specifically is "inhospitable" for anyone looking for a place to sell their games.
The accusations come from Doug Creutz of Cowen and Company who uses the August NPD numbers to back up his claims. Creutz points out that while Madden ’09 say tremendous sales on the Xbox 360, PS2 and PS3, the Wii version sold over 80% less than other consoles even though there are more Wiis in homes than any other system. Creutz then extrapolates this phenomenon into other third-party games and basically tells everyone out there that if you’re looking to actually sell your game, you’re better off putting it on a different system.
People have been accusing Nintendo of being unfair to third-parties before but the company has shrugged it off for the most part as the ranting of fanboys. However, now that the professional analysts are starting to weigh in will the charges begin to stick? More importantly, will this change the way publishers do business with Nintendo, knowing that their games will sell more briskly on other consoles? So far, Nintendo’s been rolling along just fine without all that much third-party support, so do they even need to bother to change now?
