"Casino Royale" erased any doubts about Daniel Craig as the new James Bond, and this year’s "Quantum of Solace" is looking to cement his place alongside Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan as true embodiments of the British superspy. Obviously, a video game version of Bond’s latest exploits will be appearing on all new-gen consoles, but Activision isn’t content to stop there. Rather, the company is set on putting out annual versions of the Bond license, whether there is a movie attached to it or not.
Activision currently holds the exclusive rights to the Bond franchise through 2014, and according to Cowen and Company analyst Doug Cruetz, the company is looking to produce a game a year based on Ian Fleming’s iconic character. Obviously, Hollywood can’t produce a Bond film every 12 months, so it looks like Activision will have to improvise, creating their own evil plots that James must thwart in the years when Daniel Craig is too busy doing other things to drink martini’s and blow things up with creative gadgets.
I am a bit wary about what is essentially a movie game license being expanded into an annual franchise. First off, a lot of the Bond game’s haven’t been that good, with the last universal success being Goldeneye for the Nintendo 64. Also, the last time a Bond game tried to branch out from the latest movie we got From Russia with Love, the retelling of the classic Bond film that flopped both critically and commercially. I’m willing to suspend judgment until the first non-movie Bond game comes out, but if it’s a piece of junk I’ll be waiting in the wings with a big fat "I told you so" for all the folks who thought this was a good idea.
