A Sony representative announced firmware v2.43 for the PlayStation 3 is available now for download worldwide. This latest firmware update is light on new features; in this case, entirely devoid thereof.
For the first time since launch, a firmware update has been targeted at a specific region. Said Al De Leon:
"Users outside of Japan do not need to perform this update if your PS3 system software is on version v2.41 or later."
The firmware update does not add new functionality to PS3 systems outside of Japan, and Del Leon promises no issues for users who choose to install the update. While Japanese consoles will prompt users to install the update before signing onto the PlayStation Network, all other users must select "System Update" manually from their console’s Cross Media Bar.
What on earth are Japanese PS3 owners getting that the rest of us aren’t? Better yet, what problems are Japanese gamers enduring that the rest of us aren’t? Sony definitely isn’t making a big deal over this firmware update, but my curiosity has been piqued. Any theories, readers?
