JRPG fans are in for a treat, as two genre heavyweights are making their way onto Nintendo’s handheld system. Konami has just announced Suikoden: Tierkreis, while Mistwalker is prepping Blue Dragon Plus, a sequel to last year’s Xbox 360 hit.
In Suikoden, players will start with 3 of the 108 "Stars of Destiny." Their goal is then to resurrect the remaining 105 Stars in order to do battle with the all-powerful One King. While traditional Suikoden gameplay elements will be present, Konami is also introducing an online community component where players can send their characters out on quests which will then be completed by another gamer. The action is beneficial for both players, as the one sending out the character receives new levels and power-ups, while the individual doing all the work will get a nice bonus as well.

Blue Dragon Plus takes place one year after the original, with Nene vanquished and Shu returning to a life of peace and tranquility. Things don’t stay calm however (when do they ever in the world of JRPGS?) and Shu soon finds himself facing off with a ghostly three-headed dragon bent on destruction. No gameplay details are currently available, but Blue Dragon Plus is slated for a March 2009 release.
Both titles promise to be hefty offerings for the handheld crowd. With the DS mainly targeting the casual crowd, it’s nice to occassionally be thrown an RPG bone for the core audience to dig into. We’ll keep you posted on news on these two games as it becomes available.
