Ever since Sunday, Rock Band 2 has been the talk of the town. Xbox 360 owners have been digging deep into the game’s new set list, as well as the online battle of the bands, instrument challenges, and revamped World Tour mode. You’d think that maybe we’ve all started to forget about a little franchise known as Guitar Hero, but according to Activision CEO Bobby Kotick, you’d be wrong. He would like to take a moment to remind you that Guitar Hero is still the world’s number one music franchise.
"We’re outselling [Rock Band] 6:1. When you think about the access we have to 30 percent of the world’s music at Universal, we have a unique advantage there."
"I would also say when you look at resources, you know, our next-nearest competitor has a couple of hundred people working on these projects, we have close to 2,000 people just dedicated to the Guitar Hero note tracking, introduction of new hardware, introduction of new software, and so we just have a lot more in the way of resources available to us to continue to dominate the category."
Well that’s all well and good, but let’s remember a few things here. First off, Harmonix was responsible for Guitar Hero I and II, so throw those numbers out, and there have only been two editions of Rock Band (with only one having time to achieve significant sales), as opposed to six iterations of Guitar Hero and counting. So while I’ll admit that Guitar Hero is still the more popular franchise due to brand awareness, the gulf might not be as wide as Kotick would have you believe.
So what are your thoughts? Do you prefer Guitar Hero or Rock Band? Has either franchise totally swayed you to be an exclusive adherent, or do you still play both just so you can get the full experience?
