Electronic Arts has stopped work on Tiberium, the squad-based shooter set in the Command & Conquer universe. An internal memo obtained by Kotaku cited quality issues with the game that could not be remedied with the available resources in the time frame before the game’s (expected) release in 2009 or 2010.
EA confirmed that the game has been canned. Some members of the development team at EA Los Angeles will be "released," an ominous term that could mean reassignment within that studio (as the memo implies), or even loss of employment.
Mariam Sughayer, EA spokesperson, had this to say:
"EA has suspended work on Tiberium effective immediately. The game was not on track to meet the high quality standards set by the team and by the EA Games Label. A lower quality game is not in the best interest of the consumers and would not succeed in this market."
It’s interesting to see what looked to be a fairly high-profile shooter for EA get canned for quality reasons, especially so far away from release. Looks like players pining for some first-person C&C action will have to settle for the forgotten Command & Conquer: Renegade.
