Samsung released information today stating that it’s new GDDR5 graphics chip is the fastest in the world. The new chip has the capacity to send data at a rate of six gigabits per second which makes the GDDR5 four times faster then it’s closest competition currently available on the market today. The GGDR5 will chips will have a 512 Mbit density and can also receive moving images and other similar data at 24 gigabytes per second. The GDDR5 operated at rate of 1.5 volts, which translated to a roughly 20 percent increase of power usage over it’s predecessor the GDDR3. The new graphics chip is due to enter mass production during the first half of 2008. Samsung is hoping that the chip becomes the industry standard use graphics chip by taking over 50 percent of the PC graphics market by 2010.
This is a view reinforced by this statement given by Samsung’s Marketing Director for Graphics Memory at Samsung Semiconductor Mueez Deen: “We’re pushing image enhancement to a limit never before realized, enabling the smoothest, clearest animation that gamers have yet to experience,” and that the new chip will give gamers he kind of graphics hardware performance that will spur software developers to deliver a new level of eye-popping games.” A paper discussing the technical aspects of the new chip will be presented at ISSCC 2008 and is the only piece of GDDR5 technology that will be presented there
