Microsoft is in the midst of prepping a complete overhaul to the Xbox’s menu system, with the "New Xbox Experience" promising to completely change the way we navigate the system. At the Tokyo Game Show last week, Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg had a lot to say about the new dashboard, including interesting new info on Avatars and storage requirements.
First up, Greenberg has stated that every Xbox Live user must create an Avatar, stating, "We’re forcing you to have a visual representation of yourself.” This is contrary to Microsoft’s original E3 reports, which stated that users who didn’t want Avatars wouldn’t be forced to adopt them, and that Gamerpics could continue to be used in lieu of a Microsoft Mii.
Greenberg also announced that the New Xbox Experience would require 128 MB of memory space, obviously begging the question, "What about owners without hard drives?" Greenberg stated that the company does indeed have a plan for those folks, and Major Nelson is already reassuring his readers that Microsoft will be "offering storage solutions to the Xbox LIVE community.”
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, we now also know that the new dashboard will officially launch November 19, so fully expect your Xbox to pop up that familiar update screen when you fire up your console anytime after that date. For those inherently opposed to the new look and feel, and who remain stubbornly attached to the Blades, that date also marks the last day you’ll ever be able to take your 360 online if you refuse to update.
I’m still not sure how I feel about the update, with my excitement for Netflix and the ability to gather up parties of players being tempered by my disdain of the "Mii too" Avatars and the fact that I have to donate another 128 MB of memory space to a new dashboard. I’m willing to withold full judgement until I actually get to play around with it for a while, but once that happens, you can bet there will be plenty of judgement to go around.
