One of the highest profile titles during Xbox Live’s "Summer of Arcade" was undoubtedly Castle Crashers. The game, which came from the creators of Alien Hominid HD and featured the unique art style of Dan Paladin, promised to bring old-school beat-em-up fun with a slick sense of humor. Even better, Castle Crashers was designed to be played as an online co-op game, one which would allow you to beat baddies to a bloody pulp with your friends. Sadly, that promise has yet to come true.
Ever since the game launched it’s been plagued with connectivity and online issues, and many gamers have completely given up trying to play over Xbox Live. The Behemoth has been working on a fix ever since the game’s launch, and the developers seem to finally have a solution ready to release. This post was spotted on their developer blog:
"Over the last five weeks we’ve knocked out the issues with CC and are now verifying the changes to be sure they work as intended. Work is rapidly coming to an end for us and we are prepping the build to be handed off to Microsoft for their test pass and certification. This phase involves total regression testing and can take a few weeks, at which point if any issues are brought up, the process starts anew. We are aware that many of you are unhappy about the wait, but this is how the process works to ensure you get a reliable update. We aren’t allowed to fix and upload one change at a time; all known issues must be addressed with the Title Update."
So the bad news is that it may be November before we get this update, over two months since the game’s original release. On the upside, The Behemoth is promising to fix everything that’s wrong with the game, so once the patch is applied we can all expect a downright perfect gaming experience. But then the bigger question is, does anyone still care about Castle Crashers? In a gaming culture where titles like Grand Theft Auto IV, hailed by many as the greatest game of a generation, can be forgotten in a matter of months, does an Xbox Live Arcade game have the ability to sustain interest long enough for this patch to mean anything? Are any of you still playing Castle Crashers, or have you already moved on?
