Sony would like your attention for just a moment, as the company is finally opening up the public beta for Home. That’s right, on December 11 the prophecy is fulfilled and Playstation Home finally comes, well, home.
Home director Jack Buser broke the news this morning on the Official PlayStation Blog, espousing praise and positively oozing excitement. Buser said gamers will notice "that there are always things going on – parties, tournaments, events – some of which will be announced, and some of which that will just happen. You’ve got to be there to be a part of the party, so make sure to log in often to see what is going on."
Sony is trying their hardest to get people hooked on Home right away, responding to closed beta suggestions and completely revamping the Central Plaza area to include new minigames as well as the Listen@Home service, which will allow users to vote on what songs are going to be playing inside the virtual space. If American Idol is any indication then expect a lot of syrupy pop rock and a healthy dose of hip-hop.
Home is also promoting itself as a central hub to find out all the latest and greatest (Sony related) news coming out of publishers like Activision, EA, Disney and more. Non-gaming corporations, such as Red Bull, are getting in on the act too, buying up advertising space inside Home and creating their very own branded areas where they can hawk their wares to the digital public.
One of Sony’s biggest selling points for the social networking space has been that it’s meant to be a more organic extension of online gaming. Instead of talking to a random icon, gamers are now meant to interact with avatars ala Second Life, only hopefully with less nudity and icky cyber sex.
So is this the future of online gaming and interactive social media? Or will it be just a giant waste of time and energy? You can judge for yourself starting tomorrow, I know I’m going to set about sprucing up my digital apartment so I can start impressing virtual girls -- who are probably men in real life.
