In yesterday’s Rumor Killers we speculated that Square Enix is planning on bringing Dragon Quest IX not only to the DS, but to the Wii as well. Now it looks like Square Enix is looking to do us one better by forgoing a port of the ninth installment and simply declaring that Dragon Quest X is heading to the Wii as an exclusive title. If you listen carefully, you can hear the roar of excitement coming all the way across the ocean from Japan; it’s that big of a deal.
The announcement is a sort of homecoming for the series, which was featured on Nintendo consoles -- under the name Dragon Warrior -- until Dragon Quest VII jumped ship to snuggle up to the PS1. That game was followed by the release of Dragon Quest VIII on the PS2, and now keeping with the Square Enix strategy of following the money, the latest entry into the franchise will leap to the worldwide best-selling console, rather than a particular black box that’s still struggling to keep up with the competition. Still, this isn’t the first Dragon Quest game to appear on the Wii, as the spinoff Dragon Quest Swords was released for the console several months ago.
No details on the game have yet been released, nor has any info on whether it will share some sort of connectivity with the DS version of Dragon Quest IX. We’d promise to keep our ear to the ground to pick up the latest rumblings, but if we do that we likely won’t see the giant herd of Slimes sneaking up behind us until they pounce and kill us all with their cuteness.
