Gamestop Pairing Fitness Games With Ladies Mags
Posted by James Abels, 326 days ago Jan 5, 2009 13:22

With the Wii ushering in a new era of gaming for people who aren’t adolescent and college kids, gamers may be surprised to see a sudden increase of real girls at their local Gamestop. The retailer is teaming up with feminine magazines for its “Sharpen the Mind, Shape the Body” promotion.

Free 12 month subscriptions will be offered for Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Redbook, Good Housekeeping or O Magazine. They are offering these subscriptions to anyone spending over $35 on select “fitness” games, until February, 22. Clearly, the promotion is aimed at women, and not men, as there’s no mention of Men’s Health or other male-oriented magazines as part of the deal.

“With the recent surge in active video games, which require players to either mimic the actions used in sports like bowling, tennis and baseball, or to flex their most important muscle – the brain – GameStop has more than 40 fitness-oriented titles for staying in shape from head to toe," according to the press release.

Of these titles, five are listed in the press release: Wii Fit with balance board, My Fitness Coach, Jillian Michaels’ Fitness Ultimatum 2009, Brain Age, and My Japanese Coach.

"Today’s moms are looking for ways to incorporate exercise into their lifestyle," said Mike Hogan, Gamestop’s senior vice president of marketing. "Active video games are a terrific way to reach your fitness goals, and as an added bonus, they can be enjoyed with your whole family.”

Hogan added that “getting in shape is one of the toughest New Year’s resolutions to stick with, especially for busy moms who often don’t have time to spare for exercise.”
