Free Radical Could Be On the Chopping Block
Posted by James Abels, 325 days ago Jan 6, 2009 12:10

ReSolve Partners, which is handling the administration for embattled game studio Free Radical, indicated that the company could be sold in pieces instead of as a whole.

Cameron Gunn a partner at ReSolve, told GameIndustry.biz that his company is focusing on selling Free Radical as a whole, but will entertain offers for splitting the company up if it will generate more money.

"If we can sell all of that in one hit that would be fabulous. It may be that we’re made offers for several parts of the business, which when added together total up more than one whole sale to one other interested party," he said. "But it’s early days, we’re not too sure yet, but if we can save more jobs we’d be delighted, and that’s what we’re aiming to do at this stage,"

Gunn said he would have a better sense of the level of interest over the next 10 days. "And we’re very hopeful at this stage that we will sell the business and assets as a going concern in one lump sum," he said.

Free Radical Design remains staffed by roughly 40 people, though no publishers have currently signed on to any projects, Gunn said.

As for the future of the company, Gunn said depends on "the circumstances, but ultimately it’s my decision whether or not I continue to keep the doors open, paying rent, utilities and of course the staff, as long as I think there’s a reasonable prospect of a sale - and at this stage there very much is."

Companies that are showing interest in purchasing Free Radical, in part or in whole, are Monumental Games, the Kuju Entertainment group and Codemasters.

Free Radical’s work includes Haze, Second Sight and the TimeSplitters series. The studio has been claimed in the past that ”intellectual property is the key to keeping independent studios afloat.”
