Daily News Roundup: January 7, 2009

A day after 1UP was sold to UGO Entertainment, leaving Electronic Gaming Monthly dead and roughly 30 employees out of work, there’s still plenty of shock and anger to go around. Sam Kennedy, 1UP’s site and editorial director, made the best of it on his blog. For our part, we documented the response of bitter readers. Jeff Green, 1UP’s PC gaming editor-in-chief, wasn’t so buttoned-down, delivering a scathing response to Kennedy’s original post.

In news that actually pertains to gaming, an expansion pack for Spore is coming in the Spring. We’ve known that expansions were on the way, and in fact, we still don’t have many details about this pack, (entitled Spore Galactic Adventures) so consider this news that more news is forthcoming.

Playstation 3 owners are also set to get a little more content this week. Red Bull’s space at Home is on the way, including the ability to fly a Red Bull Air Race plane. More attire for your Home avatar includes Killzone 2 costumes for people who pre-order through Amazon and Resident Evil: Degeneration T-shirts for fans.

Finally, with Oscar season approaching, the anti-Oscar awards known as the Golden Raspberry Awards, or the Razzies, are entering the nomination phase. And what commemoration of the year’s worst in film would be complete without a thorough trashing of Uwe Boll? The director notorious for game-inspired flops such as Postal and Dungeon Siege is up for four nominations: Worst Picture for both of the aforementioned films, Worst Director and Worst Career Achievement. They’d look great on the mantle.
