As soon as it was announced way back at Microsoft’s E3 convention speech the world knew Halo 3 would be a phenomenon in sales. Upon release, these predictions came true, and it broke multiple records including fastest selling game ever (until recently dethroned by WoW: Wrath of the Lich King.)
So it was no surprise when Halo 3 became the pinnacle release of this generation. What does come as a surprise is how it continues to show its self in the UK top 40 chart to this very day. After being out for over a year and a half, Halo 3 is still alive and selling at number 29 in the latest all format chart.
Lets put this in perspective: it is only two places below Playstation 3 exclusive LittleBigPlanet and which only just came out last October. It is an incredible ten places ahead of Resistance 2 which came out last November. I mean come on! We all knew Halo 3 would be big but big enough to outsell rivals nearly a year and a half after release?
It’s not only January this year that Halo 3 showed its lasting power. Back in October it was in the top 40 throughout the whole month peaking at number 16. This is the case for most of the year. There were a few months where it was just out of the top 40 but still, it is an incredible feat.
To add something else to this in enjoyed a couple of weeks as number one on the all format sales chart on popular online retailer Play.com. It now holds the number 13 spot.
There are probably good explanations for this, probably the most important of them all is the price. Other factors could include the fact that the Xbox 360 is now selling incredibly well and that the consumers all want to try what the big fuss was all about back in September 2007. Either way there is no denying that Halo 3 has become everything it was meant to and more, showing it can still go one on one with big new releases.
