Daily News Roundup: January 29, 2009
Posted by Andrew Groen, 302 days ago Jan 29, 2009 15:31

Before we get started with the news roundup, be sure to check out our stuff from today. We ran a great story from an interview we did with an XBLA developer who says that XBLA is extremely hard to develop for, and suggests that Microsoft maybe be strangling the indie developer.

Bethesda Planning New Game Based On Another Borrowed IP

I’ll never be able to understand how they did it, but somehow Bethesda managed to please everyone with Fallout 3. Even the ravenous, nonsensical Fallout forum-rats liked the game. Therefore we should all be extremely excited to find out exactly which property Bethesda will be working on next.

Now, I’m sure I’m not the only one who is a little bit disappointed that they’re not working on Elder Scrolls 5, but look on the bright side: everything they make is amazing, so no matter what they’re working on we’ll all fall in love with it.

Leipzig Essentially Cancelled, Changes Format Drastically

I’m having trouble deciding for myself whether this is good news or bad news. On the one hand, I like a little cultural diversity in my gaming expos, but on the other hand this represents one less gaming expo that I can’t go to! Which is nice.

The convention has apparently been changed to an MMO style online event that will show off mobile, browser, and client based games only. While it’s sad to see one of gaming’s biggest events disappear, this just means that we’re going to get an even bigger E3 and TGS than ever before.

PS4 Info Discovered

If you’re good at sorting through technical gobble-di-gook this is worth a look. Gamingfront.net has published a translation of a Japanese blog that recently posted some tech specs and information on the inevitable PS4.

The big news to come out of this is that Sony will be sticking with the Cell Processor to power the next machine. However, it seems that they have plans to alter it so that the number of cores is cut down in order to streamline the development process for game makers.

Sony Posts 400 million yen profit in Q3

Despite widespread rumors that Sony and the PS3 are failing miserably, new reports came out today that show Sony’s game division making a 400 million yen profit. This translates into roughly $4.5 million USD.

This is a relatively small gain overall, but seeing as how many companies are falling into bankruptcy with many more barely avoiding it, just the fact that they’re making a profit at all is a very good sign. After all, it’s not easy to convince a consumer to spend $400+ on superfluous entertainment in this economic climate.
