Sega has announced today that they have begun working on the second Iron Man game to be based off of the major summer blockbuster. The game is scheduled to be released in 2010 alongside the undoubtedly enormously popular film sequel.
"We are thrilled to build on the success of the ’Iron Man’ phenomenon and work with Marvel and Paramount on another epic project," says Simon Jeffery, President of SEGA of America, Inc. "SEGA and Marvel are collaborating closely to ensure we deliver an authentic ’Iron Man’ experience."
Critics lambasted the original game when it released alongside the original film in 2008. The metacritic average of all scores compiled for the Iron Man game was extremely poor. Only the Nintendo DS version of the game managed to score above 50%.
They complained that the title was far too short (some claiming it lasted only 2-3 hours) with repetitive missions, a terrible story, and even ugly cutscenes. However, some complimented it for being better than most film to game and comic to game adaptations. Although, I think that’s rather in the category of damning with faint praise.
Despite these incredibly harsh reviews, the game still went on to sell very well with over two million copies sold across all platforms.
Very little information about the sequel has been released so far. All Sega is letting out is that the game is being developed at their San Fransisco studio, and that the team is working hard to refine the engine so that the sequel can expand on the success of the first.
