Blend Games is reporting from the New York Comic Con that Velvet Assassin, the highly anticipated World War II stealth-action game, will not go the familiar route with Downloadable content, and will instead choose not to publish any material post-release.
Additionally, they have also said that they have no plans to develop a sequel for this game. They told Blend Games that since Velvet Assassin is based loosely on historical figures and events they wanted to make sure they were being respectful to the family. To quote Blend Games, “I guess having a sequel would be like making a Titanic 2 where Leonardo Dicaprio and the rest of the dead passengers had survived and created a magical city under the sea.” Sort of sounds like Bioshock, doesn’t it?
Funny. I had assumed all historical accuracy and respectfulness had been thrown out the window when they put the heroine, a hero of World War II, in a nightie (pictured.)
Video games have a tendancy to exploit their subject matter as horribly as they can just to make a better game, but this time it’s almost sad to see that they aren’t doing a follow up to Velvet Assassin. I don’t like it when video game companies just send their games off into the world to either fluorish or die.
Personally, I think that the fact they are already planning on refusing DLC and a sequel stinks of development troubles. There are certainly other options to direct sequels and DLC. Prequels are always fun, and then there’s the simple idea of changing the main character to another female spy.
We may never know what the issue is, but I am 100% certain that if Velvet Assassin sells more than 1.5 million copies you’ll see the publisher change their tune very quickly. My guess is, if the sales are decent, we’ll likely see both DLC and a sequel.
