Chances are if you have ever been in a decently equipped arcade before, you know just how super awesome Virtual On Oratorio Tangram (better known as just Virtual On) is. Sitting behind the arcade booth, sweaty palms manipulating the game’s twin flight sticks as your mech strafed across the arena amidst bursts of weapon fire and laser sword slashes, swearing and bellowing in rage as your mech took one hit too many and detonated in glorious pixeltated flames-Virtual On was tense, exhilarating, and competitive.
So it comes as incredible news that Sega has announced in the latest issue of Famitsu that they are bringing a port of Virtual On to the Xbox 360 for 1200 Microsoft Points or $15. Virtual On is just being released in Japan for now, but gamers abroad can also look forward to getting their arena dueling, mech funk as well in the near future.
Virtual On first graced arcades in Japan in 1998 and was later ported to the Sega Dreamcast one year later. The premise of the game is about as basic as it is awesome: you pilot one of several different* robots, and you kill your opponent. You strafe side to side, fly in the air, lob bombs, shoot lasers, and slice with your sword, etc. until the other robot blows up.
Whether or not Sega plans to release a controller for the Xbox 360 that resembles the arcade’s super cool, dual flight stick set up has yet to be addressed.
