Sonic Co-Creator Reviving Pac-man
Posted by Ryan Skees, 264 days ago Mar 6, 2009 18:22

Just when you thought you had seen the last of the pellet-gobbling yellow guy, some one brings him back from the dead.

According to Gamasutra.com, former Naughty Dog employees and co-creator of the original Sonic the Hedgehog Hirokazu Yasuhara are working on a revival of Pac-Man at Namco Bandai’s US studio for the game’s 30th anniversary in 2010.

Makoto Iwai, Namco Bandai Games America EVP and COO, said, “We are in the midst of making Pac-Man come back because his 30th anniversary is in 2010 actually. As a group, we feel like we should do something to make him come back. So, there’s one project that we started working on, and [Yasuhara is] part of it." Iwai had just recently joined Namco Bandai after leaving Naughty Dog.

After finishing their most recent project, Afro Samurai, which the entire internal development team was working on, NBGA has been able to split the team up into several groups. One of these groups will be working with Yasuhara on the new Pac-Man project.

In an interview with Gamasutra at last year’s GDC, Yasuhara expressed interest in developing a character action game. He felt that the genre had potential for a comeback, given the lack of these titles in the current gaming market. It looks like he will now have the chance with this new project.

Regarding Yasuhara’s project, Iwai said, “Yes, it’s sort of meeting his wish 100 percent, in a sense."

You can expect to see the e new adventures of Pac-Man sometime in 2010.
