Activision Blizzard is one of the few video game publishers who have managed to flourish during these turbulent, economic times. However, being one of the best at what they do is not enough for the company that has brought us the Call of Duty and World of Warcraft franchises. In an interview with Reuters, the Chief Executive of Activison, Robert Kotick says he wants the company to do even better.
The primary focus, said Kotick, will be for Activision to focus more on original titles and the Nintendo Wii.
“In the past we approached the Wii as an extension of what we were doing on PlayStation and the Xbox and I think we can do a better job of creating original content for the Wii, and I think you’ll see more of that this year."
In addition to sequels and spin-offs of successful franchises like Guitar Hero: Metallica and the highly-anticipated Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Activision is planning on releasing at least two new original properties later this year, including the third-person action title Prototype, and the first-person shooter Singularity.
"We’re just scratching the surface of opportunity as a publisher in Europe. There’s a lot more that we can do.” said Kotick. "In China and Korea, Blizzard has had great success but Activision products have not really had any success there."
Blizzard has been one of the most popular developers in Asia since its 1998 hit Starcraft became a staple of Asia’s professional gaming circuit in 2002. Additionally, Blizzard’s MMORPG, World of Warcraft, entertains a sizable audience world wide with over 11.5 million current subscribers.
