If you’ve exhausted your fun supply with Resident Evil 5 after co-op play night after night sprinkled with a few matches of Mercenaries, then you can finally play with others. The Versus mode has been dated for April 7, 2009, or tomorrow, if you haven’t been keeping up with dates. If you’re in dire need of some Versus buddies, you’d better round some up tonight!
Versus mode can be yours for the paltry sum of 400 Microsoft points or $4.99 via the PlayStation Network. If you haven’t had enough of similar gameplay in Left 4 Dead, Versus mode will bring two new gametypes with it. Survivor’s Rule will pit players against players in heated deathmatches, and Slayer’s Rule will be a match to determine which player can slaughter the most Majini in a predetermined time limit.
After its initial announcement, gamers were quick to call Capcom out on their overpricing and shady ways due to the fact that it seemed to many that they would simply be unlocking Versus mode on the Resident Evil 5 disc. Capcom has denied such allegations, even going so far as to label fans’ complaints as "BS." While 400 Microsoft points doesn’t seem too expensive, it should be noted that the only real additions that will be included with Versus mode will be the gametype - no new maps, characters, or other goodies.
It’s not quite worth the points to me. Toss in some new costumes, weapons, or characters, and then it may be a different story. Right now, it feels like too insignificant of an addition to justify the purchase. Imagine a real deathmatch with the same control scheme!
In any case, who’s planning on taking the plunge?
