Despite stagnant sales in the United States and Europe, Kombo reports that in the latest issue of Game Famitsu, Nonaka Ryutaro, producer of Valkyria Chronicles, insists that he and Sega are both entertaining the idea of producing a sequel to the Playstation 3 exclusive, strategy RPG. No official confirmation of a sequel, however, has yet to be made.
Even though Valkyria Chronicles received relatively high marks amongst critics (with a Metacritic average of 87%) and was praised as being one of the best RPG’s for the Playstation 3, it did not sell well in North America during its initial release in the highly competitive month of November 2008. According to NPD Group, Valkyria Chronicles was overshadowed by other big name titles, like Gears of War 2 and Call of Duty: World at War, and only managed to sell 33,000 games during its first month. In comparison, Valkyria Chronicles was received much better in Japan during its launch earlier that year in April, and sold 77,000 copies in its first week.
While gamers wait for official news concerning a Valkyria Chronicles sequel, Sega has commissioned an anime adaption of the game (which is currently airing now in Japan) and is also planning on introducing multiple packs of new downloadable content in the near future. According to 1UP, included in the downloadable content will be a new difficulty setting (Hard EX Mode) as well as two new campaign modes ("Behind Her Blue Flame" and ""Enter the Edy Detachment") that follow the separate exploits of Squad 7’s Edy and an Imperial engineer named Johann.
