No MotionPlus Support Coming to Old Wii Games
Posted by Mark Fujii, 224 days ago Apr 15, 2009 16:20

According to GameDaily, Nintendo has announced that they have no future plans for releasing patches that would allow older Nintendo Wii titles to be compatible with the upcoming Wii accessory, MotionPlus.

"The Wii MotionPlus accessory is only for games that are designed to make use of its abilities." said Nintendo.

Wii Motionplus is designed to fit into the bottom of the Wii remote and allows gamers to use the controller with more precision than before. Utilizing a multi-axis gyroscope technology invented by a company called Invensense, Wii MotionPlus enables the Nintendo Wii to determine true 1:1 motion.

Wii MotionPlus is set to hit store shelves on June 8 and will retail for $19.99. Additionally, it will also be packaged in with Wii Sports Resort when its released on July 26 for $49.99. Wii Sports Resort will be the first game to actually use the MotionPlus’, however, meaning that customers who pick up the accessory early really will not have anything to use it for. On the other hand, given how quickly Nintendo products seem to sell, grabbing a few extra MotionPlus’ before everyone actually needs them may not be such a bad idea.

Nintendo’s decision to not support earlier titles with the Wii MotionPlus is not entirely unprecedented. When Nintendo released the Rumble Pack for the Nintendo 64 in Japan, earlier titles like Wave Race 64 and Mario 64 could not take advantage of the force-feedback device. Two months later, both games were re-released with Rumble Pack support added.
