Ubisoft announced today some of the features we can expect from the Nintendo Wii exclusive Red Steel 2 when it hits store shelves sometime during the 2009 holiday season. According to Go Nintendo, Red Steel 2 will offer a non-linear adventure with several hub worlds, side quests, collectibles, boss fights and more. However, unlike its 2006 predecessor, a multiplayer feature will not be included.
Red Steel 2 retains its unique hybrid of gun and sword play. This time the gameplay is enhanced using the new Wii Motion Plus, meaning that controlling the onscreen action should be more accurate and responsive than in the original Red Steel. There are going to be some RPG elements implemented into the gameplay that will allow you to level up your character, and the game will also allow you to revisit old areas with your arsenal of newly acquired weapons and abilities.
The original Red Steel included a four-man, offline multiplayer mode that allowed gamers to fight their friends to the death using a variety of weapons ranging from katanas to submachine guns. However, Ubisoft has decided to forgo any form of multiplayer this time around, opting to concentrate on Red Steel 2’s singe player mode.
"We would love to create a multiplayer engine, but not right now." said Ubisoft. "It’s single player because we want to really focus on the core mechanic and as much as we all want to kill each other with swords, it’s not going to happen this time."
When asked if there was a possibility that a multiplayer mode might be developed for future downloadable content, Ubisoft said, "That would be cool. The world has changed, and we can do that sort of thing. I certainly think that would be cool. I’d buy it."
Additionally, possibly in regards to the controversy that surrounded Capcom’s Resident Evil 5 multiplayer downloadable content last month, Ubisoft also added, "But we need to be careful bringing out something that people think should be in the main game.”
