Activision and Treyarch announced today that their first set of downloadable content, Map Pack 1, for Call of Duty: World at War has managed to sell over 2 million copies over Xbox LIVE and PSN since its release in March. Taking into consideration its affordable price tag of ten dollars, Map Pack 1 has garnered Activision a tidy profit of over $20 million.
According to Joystiq, Mark Lamia, the head of Treyarch, thanked gamers for their support. He also mentioned that a new set of downloadable content, which includes even more multiplayer maps, will be available this coming June. The not so subtle implication of the reminder, we can presume, is that Lamia wants us to continue our support and help Map Pack 2 reach the 2-million-unit-sold milestone as well.
Map Pack 1 originally broke Xbox LIVE sales records when it was purchased over 1 million times during its first weekend.
No official announcement concerning for Map Pack 2 has been announced yet, but seeing as how well Map Pack 1 sold with its ten dollar price tag, it is not too hard to imagine that Activision will adopt a similar pricing structure for their next round of downloadable content.
Call of Duty: World at War was released in November 2009 to relatively positive reviews. It currently has an average Metacritic rating of 85%. As of March 2009, Call of Duty: World at War has sold an estimated 10 million copies on the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii.
