Days 2 and 3 of GDC 08
Posted by Mark Melnychuk, Feb 22, 2008 08:32

The last couple of days at GDC have been pretty hard on our feet, mainly because of the immense amount of things to see and do, but one thing TGR can assure you is the fantastic line-up of previews and interviews that will be online in the coming days. To start off with yesterday, we stopped by the Epic booth for a peak at some of the updates being developed for the Unreal Engine, which of course sent out imaginations reeling with the possibilities that this could bring the recently announced Gears of War 2. Earlier on, we were able to score a couple of interviews with the folks at Turbine, developer of Dungeons & Dragons Online and Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar, so any subscribers of either game should make sure to check out the interviews to see what’s coming up in their favorite MMO’s.

One of the most exciting things of Wednesday however was our stop over at Emotiv’s booth, the company that is literally changing the way you think about videogames. Mark and Ben both got a chance to wear the thought sensing headset and interact with the innovative technology. Later, we had a chance to have a quick chat with Nam Do, CEO and co-founder at Emotiv Systems on the implications on this incredible technology.

Today was even more packed, starting in the morning with a presentation of Monster Lab for the Nintendo Wii, developed by Backbone Entertainment, so keep an eye out for our preview and gameplay footage of monster customization and battles. Shortly after that, it was off to Emergent Game Technologies, which is trying to bring more power and creative freedom to game developers by offering advanced, low priced middleware known as Gamebryo. PlayStation fans will have plenty to look forward to with our hands on time spent with PSP games God of War: Chains of Olympus and Final Fantasy: Crisis Core, featuring gameplay videos for both. We were also able to grab some video of Warhawk running the latest update which includes new vehicles and weapons.

The fun didn’t stop there, later making a stop at Havok’s booth to see version 6.0 of the software that continues to move the industry forward, now with advanced cloth reaction and movement behaviors, as well as jaw dropping real time destruction physics. Later on, TGR’s senior editor Brandon paid a visit to Valve’s booth and chatted with Erik Johnson, who has been with the company for many years and talked about the success of the Orange Box and what Valve has planned next. At the same time, TGR’s Ben and Mark were off at a Lucas Arts event and were shown three big titles: The Force Unleashed, Fracture, and Lego Indiana Jones. After that there was just a few more hours left in the day to head over to Sierra’s Prototype party, where we were able to take some gameplay footage of the titles powerful, as you will see, main character wreaking all sorts of havoc.

The only thing that makes our feet hurt even more is the thought that there is still another day to go, but we couldn’t be happier. Over the next few days be sure to check back with TGR for complete articles and interviews of everything mentioned above.
