Viacom has announced that the popular game Rock Band has shipped over three million bundled units since its release in November, according to Gamedaily.com. It has also sold over ten million song downloads through its music store. A statement from Viacom (the parent company of MTV, which owns Rock Band developer Harmonix) said: “Media Networks revenues rose 16% to $2.02 billion, principally driven by strong sales of the music video game Rock Band”.

The President and CEO of Viacom, Philippe Dauman, believes that Rock Band will prove itself as a “valuable long-term franchise,” and that its success will only continue to grow when it is released in Europe and on the Nintendo Wii.

A big player in the increasing amount of downloadable songs being purchased was the release of a patch for the game so that it now includes an in-game Music Store. The downloadable content is now much more accessible; the in-game Music Store has resulted in four million songs being downloaded since late March, when it came online.
