The Gamerscore blog has some data regarding sales and online activity for GTA IV, and let’s just say that the news will make some of the higher-ups at Microsoft do their dance of joy. The report states that GTA IV sold over 6 million units and made $500 million in its first week, and that 60% of all sales were for the Xbox 360 version of the game. On top of the impressive software stats, GTA seems to be moving hardware as well, as Gamerscore reports that 40% of new console sales are coming with a copy to GTA IV.

Things are also rosy online, with more than 2.3 million people playing the game over Xbox Live. GTA IV is now the #1 game on Xbox Live, dethroning both Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 in a mere 7 days. In addition, Microsoft is reporting that over the weekend, over 1 million gamers were all online playing GTA IV at the same time. Talk about pushing the servers to the limit!

The numbers seem to bear out that GTA IV is a genuine phenomenon, with gamers of all stripes buying up copies and playing them online. While the press release only speaks to Xbox 360 numbers, you can bet that the PS3 is seeing similiar attachment rates and sales. The question then becomes, if you aren’t playing GTA IV yet, what the hell is wrong with you?
