A member of the DIS boards has posted a rather awkward and embarrassing story concerning the Wii Fit’s ability to determine if the user is “overweight.” The poster’s relative, a 10 year old girl, whom they claim to be “solidly built” but “not fat,” expressed their shock and horror when the game designated the girl as overweight. While one can understand the ability of the Wii fit to determine your ideal weight, the fact that so many families with young daughters use the Wii have customers such as this one worried that the game’s function of evaluating your body type could have negative repercussions.
“We already have to worry about young girls starving themselves to look like the magazine models and now we have a game that tells them they’re fat” said the user, who has already sent a letter of complaint to Nintendo but has not received a response. Although having a game tell you that you are overweight isn’t exactly a vote of confidence, the same kind of cruel blunt statements can come from other things such as people or even a scale.
