BITMAPS 72: If You Disliked Resident Evil 5, Get Some Friends

TGR columnist Lawrence Sonntag explores the negative reception of Resident Evil 5, and why the game’s subtle divergence from the Resident Evil experience is not only good, but necessary.

Do AAA X360 Games Lack Originality? Part One

Paul Delamore dissects the top 20 Metacritic-rated Xbox 360 titles and examines whether or not they deserve their spot. Is the 360 just a platform for tired rehashes and HD updates of last-gen gameplay?

TGR Editorial: God of War 3 has Resident Evil 5 Syndrome

Acting as a calming voice in a sea of hyperactive nerds, TGR editor Andrew Groen warns that sometimes we have a tendency to build games up to be more than they are. As such, God of War 3 probably won’t be the best game ever made, even though it probably will be really fun to play.

Sony Disses DSi

SCEA’s Director of Hardware Marketing John Kroller interpreted months of losing to the DS in sales as a sign that he should start throwing barbs, claiming that the DSi will continue to appeal to the kids market that the DS always has.

I guess when you don’t have to spend all day counting gigantic piles of money you have spare time to throw around silly and inaccurate statements.

Steve Wiebe to Take on Billy Mitchell at E3

The stars of King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters will duke it out live at E3 2009. If you’re familiar with the movie, you know that Billy Mitchell rarely competes with other players in a live venue. Get the popcorn and soda ready, cause this will be one hell of a show.

And, around the rest of the internet…

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories announced for Wii, PS2, PSP

Konami officially announced Silent Hill: Shattered Memories today for the Wii, PS2, and PSP systems. The game is a "re-imagining" of the original Silent Hill released a full decade ago (do you feel old now?)

The Wii version will allow players to use the Wii remote as a torch to navigate dark areas or as a cell phone to receive hints and use a GPS map. The game will also feature a "psyche profile element," which monitors a player’s actions and adjusts the game’s visuals and character dialogue to match. The PS2 and PSP versions of the game will feature more traditional controls.

Of course, the real question here is – will they nonsensically shove Pyramid Head into the game? At least we can count on a UFO ending.

Assassin’s Creed 2 teaser site goes live

A teaser site for Assassin’s Creed 2 launched today, providing Da Vinci-like illustrations and a ton of vexing hints that seem pertinent but you’re not quite sure how. Anyone that finished the first Assassin’s Creed knows what to expect, and will probably evoke more than a few flashbacks to hours spent squinting at glowy writing on office walls.

Resident Evil 5 multiplayer DLC dated

Just in case you’re chomping at the bit to pay $5 for competitive multiplayer in a game that isn’t really about competitive multiplayer, never fear. The versus DLC for Resident Evil 5 will launch tomorrow, April 7th, for both the PS3 and X360.

The DLC includes two game modes: Slayer’s Rule in which players kill Majini for points, and Survivor’s Rule, in which players must kill each other.

Raven claims Wolfenstein not a WWII game

While the statement may raise an eyebrow or two, Wolfenstein Creative Director Eric Biessman makes a very compelling argument.

"While the game is set in WWII, it’s not a WWII game," Beissman said, "that’s like saying the Indiana Jones movies are WWII movies."

Given the distinct lack of nazi wizards and mecha Hitlers in Brothers in Amrs or Medal of Honor, I’d have to agree.

2,500,000,000 Achievements Unlocked

Thanks to the efforts of millions of average gamers and a handful of truly insane ones, 2.5 billion achievements have been unlocked on Microsoft’s Xbox 360. This begs the question – how big is your share?
